Outdoor Powersports
Equipment & Technology
The Outdoor Power Equipment program focuses on all aspects of system operations and component breakdown related to the small gasoline engine industry. Students get to learn the general theories of systems and apply repair/troubleshooting techniques to small gas engines while utilizing the same tools and equipment found in repair shops all over the country. Students will get the opportunity to practice on customer and school owned equipment. Safe operation practices are implemented into every aspect of student training.
The Powersports technology program focuses on all aspects of the system of operations and the component breakdown related to the Powersports industry. Students get to learn general theories of systems and apply repair/troubleshooting techniques to Powersports vehicles while utilizing the same tools and equipment found in dealerships all over the country. Students will get the opportunity to practice on customer and school owned equipment. Safe operation practices are implemented into every aspect of student training.
Program Content Year 1
Introduction to Small Gasoline Engines (6 weeks)
Students will learn basic safety and hands-on skills needed to work in a small engine repair facility, including the following:
- Shop Safety
- Tools
- Precision Measuring
- Fasteners
- Fundamentals of Electricity
Basics of Engine Operation (6 weeks)
Students will learn the general theories of engine operation unique to the outdoor power equipment industry, including the following:
- Basic Two and Four Stroke Engine Operation
- Engine Component
- Measuring Engine Performance
Engine Systems (6 weeks)
Students will learn the theory and operation of different engine support systems found on modern small gasoline engines, including the following:
- Fuel Supply Systems
- Carburetion
- Ignition Systems
- Lubrication Systems
- Cooling Systems
Engine Service and Overhaul (12 weeks)
Students will learn the general maintenance and troubleshooting of engine support systems found on small gasoline engines and will also learn the complete disassembly, inspection, repair and reassembly of small gasoline engines found in the outdoor power equipment industry including the following:
- Preventive Maintenance
- Troubleshooting
- Fuel System Service
- Ignition System Service
- Engine Disassembly and Inspection
- Cylinder Crankshaft and Piston Service
- Camshaft and Valve Train Service
- Engine Reassembly and Break-In
OPE Engine Applications (5 weeks)
Students will learn the different equipment and applications that use small gasoline engines. Students will learn safe operation of outdoor power equipment and general non-engine related maintenance involved with equipment found in the OPE industry. Students will also learn about career opportunities, qualifications and certification found in the Outdoor Power Equipment industry.
